My humans try to ditch me once in a while. I’m onto them.
I am learning their pattern. Here’s how it goes:
First, they both take showers.
Next, they put clothes on that are clean, without a trace of me or a smelly bully stick.
And then they give me a lot of attention and pats, and tell me what a good boy I am.
These are the tell-tale signs I’m going to be shut in the bathroom, with the lights out, for what seems like forever. I’ve given up howling over the indignity, and accepting my fate, settling into my favorite, fleece blanket.
But that doesn’t mean I like it.
So, when this dance commenced last night, I hid. For the first time all day I wasn’t a snout away from my humans.
I crawled under the sofa, out of sight, and barely took a breath, hoping they’d forget I was there.
They called my name, shook a treat bag, and all kinds of things, but I didn’t make a peep or a move.
One human spotted my tail (doggone it, I’ll remember that next time). He got on his hands and knees to pull me out from under the couch.
I went limp, pretending I was dead.
They laughed, LAUGHED, I say,
And off I went, back in the bathroom.
But here’s some very good news. We have discovered the joys of Doggy Day Care, and I am now enrolled in what they call Dudley’s Camp, although the sign says the place is called ‘It’s a Ruff Life.’
I was a bit timid at first, I confess, but a very nice human took me outside and then brought out dogs one by one to meet me. I’m the littlest one there, but they were all nice.
We had so much fun!
I got to go back today, and as soon as I realized where we were I wagged my tail and bolted for the front door for them to let me in!
Note to my humans: Forget the frigging bathroom. Bring me to Camp Dudley if you need your stupid alone time.
Hey, do you know about the Okoboji Writers’ Retreat? It’s in September, and you are invited.

Oh Dudley, you make me LAUGH, hiding under the sofa like that
Oh Dear Dudley, Francie and I are so happy for you! Our person tried the bathroom thing and even the kitchen thing but finally she discovered what she calls the “rug blanket.” It’s soft on one side and rubber on the other side which she spreads out when she needs to have her alone time. We learned if we are in need of a visit outside we can use the “rug blanket.” We don’t mind being alone together cause when our human gets back home we get lots of cuddles and a long walk! Thanks for telling us about your camp! Life is so good! Love and Barks from Finley Nelson
